If you’re like most people, you are aware of the high gas prices. As a result, you may be eager to try some things that will help you get more out of a tank. But, before you do anything silly, here are some gas myths you shouldn’t believe courtesy of our Toyota service center.

Buying in the Morning Gets You More Gas

This misconception has been around for years, and many people still think it’s true. While cooler gas is denser, due to the storage tanks the fuel sits in, it won’t matter what the air temperature is when you put it in your car.

Driving with Windows Up Saves Gas

When your windows are down, the aerodynamics of your car are affected, right? And this hurts your gas mileage? Wrong. While it may sound plausible, there isn’t any proof. In fact, keeping your windows down instead of running the AC means you won’t use up as much gas.

You Should Only Use Premium Gas

Some cars do require gas at a higher octane level, but most don’t. If your car doesn’t and you decide to use it anyway, not only will this do nothing for your gas mileage, but it may also result in you wasting money.

Putting a Car in Neutral Saves Gas

Here’s another myth that’s been floating around seemingly forever. Because of modern fuel-injection systems, fuel injectors shut off when you ease of the gas pedal. Therefore, there is no reason to shift into neutral at stoplights.

While none of these things will help you save gas, there are a couple of service tasks that can. An oil change will let your engine run more efficiently, which will boost your fuel economy. Making sure your tires are properly inflated will also help you get more out of a tank of gas.
