Wondering why you need to regularly change the oil in your Toyota vehicle? While many drivers understand oil change service, they still have questions about the why and the when. Our team here at Heritage Toyota Owings Mills has the answers you’re looking for.

Oil Change Q+A

Q: How often do I need to change my oil?

Technically, the answer to this question varies depending on your vehicle. It’s good practice to change your oil frequently if you drive a lot, about every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Even if you don’t drive frequently, though, you still need to change your oil. As your car sits, your oil will begin to degrade and lose viscosity, which will negatively affect your vehicle’s performance. We recommend changing your oil around every six months to avoid this.

Q: What is an oil change, and how long does it take?

A: Oil changes are one of the fastest, easiest service appointments for your Toyota vehicle. Generally, they can be anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. Many customers opt to wait at our service center while their vehicle is being worked on. During this time, our technicians will remove the motor oil from your vehicle and replace it with brand-new motor oil. We will also replace the oil filter if needed.

Q: Does it matter what kind of oil I use?

A: Nowadays, most vehicles use a synthetic blend of oil as opposed to conventional motor oil. Our auto technicians will reference your vehicle owner’s manual that shows the specific type of oil to use in your car. We'll also account for your driving habits, the age of your vehicle, and other factors to determine the best oil for your car.
