The results are in, and once again, Japanese automaker Toyota is back on top when it comes to global automobile sales. But, how did it rise to the top? Well, sales jumped an amazing 23 percent overall in 2012, as the brand shifted into high gear after an onslaught of recalls and production troubles in 2011.
Jessica Caldwell, senior analyst at Edmunds.com, explains some of the reasons that Toyota is currently sitting on top, stating, "They're back from their inventory problems, the recalls are behind them, and in 2012 they came out with a lot of new products."1
In 2012, Toyota sold 9.75 million vehicles around the world, putting ahead of its top rival GM, which sold 9.29 million vehicles worldwide. German automaker Volkswagen took third place, with global sales at 9.07 vehicles. Toyota was previously the Number One spot-holder between 2008-2010, but it lost the crown to GM in 2011.
The expanded 2013 Toyota Prius lineup and the 2013 Toyota RAV4 have been pinpointed as some of the reasons Toyota was able to rise to the top again, and a brand-new Toyota Corolla, which will be unveiled soon, should help to keep sales high.
