Each year, Consumer Reports creates a list of the Best and Worst New-Car values, and there have always been rather traditional and popular subcompacts atop that list. This year, however, those gasoline-powered models had to switch gears and make room for the Toyota Prius, which became the first hybrid-powered vehicle to top the annual list. The magazine even reports that the cost to operate the Prius (about 49 cents per mile) is about half that of a conventional vehicle.
The Honda Fit, which held the title of Best New-Car Value for the past four years before the Prius took its place, is priced at a much thriftier price of $16,915. But, according to the ratings, the Prius (priced at $26,750 in its Four trim) still knocks it out. CR looks at predicted reliability, five-year cost of ownership, and road-test scores.
Overall, Toyota is set to have top global sales this year and next year as well. A record 9.7 million cars were sold in 2012, a 22 percent gain from 2011. The Toyota Camry Hybrid XLE was chosen as the Best Value Family Sedan, and the Toyota Prius V Three was chosen as the Best Value Minivan-Wagon.
