At this month's Frankfurt Motor Show, Toyota showcased their new Prius Plug-In Hybrid. Thanks to the plug-in component the new Toyota Prius variant offers about 11.2 miles more in range compared to its conventional Prius counterpart.

Even more exciting, the 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid requires only two-and-a-half  to three hours to charge, using a standard outlet -half that, if using a 240V circuit. To put this into perspective, some EV brands can take upwards of 20 hours to charge, depending on the outlet/charging unit used.  The comparatively short charging time and extended range of the Toyota Prius Plug-In make it  a practical and sensible stepping stone away from petrol-powered cars, and toward  pure EVs.

Given the Toyota Plug-In is, well, a plug-in hybrid, you know it offers stellar fuel economy. Just how stellar? We're talking 49 mpg in hybrid mode and 87 mpg in pure-electric mode!

More than enviously efficient, the Toyota Prius Plug-In is also very fun to drive. With a combined 100kW powertrain, the 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-In is definitely good for a 10.7-second 0-62 mpg hike.

To offer drivers a more individualized experience, Toyota offers a suit of optional add-ons, including: JBL's GreenEdge sound system, touchscreen auxiliary controls and satellite navigation, among others. The JBL GreenEdge sound system is particularly interesting. It's, actually specially engineered with a high-quality, high-efficiency amplifier and speakers that consume half the energy of conventional systems.

What will the Toyota Prius Plug-In cost? And, when will it be available? Toyota has just announced the new plug-in hybrid will start at $32,760. And, it's slated to go on sale in 14 launch states (i.e., CA, OR, WA, AZ, ME, MA, VT, NH, RI, CT, NY, NJ, MD, VA) next month with deliveries starting in early 2012.
