The Toyota Motor Manufacturing plant in West Virginia currently builds six-speed transmissions for many of Toyota's V6-engine models, including the Toyota Avalon, the Toyota Camry, the Toyota Sienna, the Toyota Venza, and even the Lexus RS350. The Japanese automaker palns to invest a lofty sum of $64 million into the facility with the goal of expanding production of six-speed automatic transmissions.

How does this translate to units produced? It will bring Toyota Motor Manufacturing West Virginia's annual transmission capacity to just under 400,000.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing West Virginia, however, is not expected to meet a capacity of some 400,000 units alone. Bodine Aluminum facilities in Jackson, Tennessee and Troy Missouri are also planning to expand their capacity to support Toyota's impressive goal. Specifically, the two Bodine Aluminum facilities will be responsible for providing transmission cases and housing parts to the West Virginia facility.

Bodine's joint venture with Toyota represents a more modest investment of $8.4 million. Nevertheless, it will increase their capacity by over 320,000 units annually and create 20 new jobs in addition to the 40 new jobs created by Toyota.

Perhaps more important though, the plant's growth will create a handful of new jobs, which in today's market is a spectacle to behold. To support the expansion of six-speed automatic transmissions in West Virginia, Toyota expects to create 40 new jobs, bringing the plant's total employment to approximately 1,100.
